How did this patient hear about Water’s Edge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center? Former Patient

Details of Experience:
Frances Monaghan is a loving wife and mother who enjoys spending quality time with her family and adores her husband. When Frances found herself in the hospital, being away from her family was the hardest part. After being diagnosed with sepsis and a urinary tract infection, and spending some time in Mather Hospital, it was suggested that Frances go to a sub-acute rehabilitation center to build her strength again. For Frances, it was an easy choice. She chose to return to the rehabilitation center which took exceptionally good care of her the last time she needed care: Water’s Edge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Upon arrival to Water’s Edge Rehab & Nursing Center at Port Jefferson, Frances was greeted by members of our interdisciplinary staff. She was escorted to her private room by our admitting nurse and was evaluated immediately. Despite what she had been through and being in a rehabilitation center, Frances was only worried about one thing and that was her husband. Mrs. Monaghan expressed to our team that her husband would be having a colonoscopy and she was very worried. As a team, we reached out to her family to make sure to keep Frances updated. We were able to reassure Francis that her husband was doing well which made her feel much better than she did upon arrival.

Following her husband’s colonoscopy, it was suggested that he also go to a sub-acute rehabilitation center and what better choice than the one which was treating his wife. The team at Water’s Edge and the Monaghan family worked together diligently to ensure that Frances and Robert were able to be together once again. After weeks of being a part, Frances and her husband, Robert, were finally reunited and now she was ready to get to work.

Frances worked with physical therapy to gain endurance and strength with the end goal of going home and being able to walk again. She worked with her therapist, Jessica and Jayne, using resistance exercises, therapeutic exercises and bed mobility activities. Mrs. Monaghan’s occupational therapist, Nichole, worked with her to facilitate independence in self-care tasks and increase activity tolerance. Frances sometimes became unmotivated and anxious during therapy sessions, but her therapists always supported and pushed her to work through her session to the best of her ability.

It was a long and winding road for Frances, but after a couple of months of working hard and perseverance, she was ready to go home. Frances went from being completely dependent on assistance to only needing someone to be close by in case she needed any help. Upon discharge, Frances expressed gratitude to our team for all their help and for making it possible for her and her husband to walk this part of their journey together and return home together!

Team Water’s Edge wishes Frances and Robert good health and happiness.
